AL.FESTIVAL.2024 marked the fifth edition of Berlin's annual celebration of South West Asian and North African contemporary pop and alternative music. Held on 12 October at Festsaal Kreuzberg, the festival brought together Berlin's SWANA diaspora with a wider network of Global Majority music collectives shaping the city's scene. After the 2023 edition was cancelled in light of the war in Palestine, 2024 became an opportunity to ask what role a musical community can play in Berlin amid a crisis that feels less like a rupture and more like a continuing condition. The programme was shaped in collaboration with Berlin-based collectives and media partners including Adira Party, Latin Arab, and Refuge Worldwide, and featured artists such as Rola Azar, El Sawareekh, Ahmad Eid, Sami Galbi, and Tales & Ahlam, among others. Alongside the main festival, an OFF-Festival programme responded to recent experiences within Berlin's anti-colonialist and pro-Palestinian artistic community, creating alternative spaces for expression. Held over three days at Refuge Worldwide's new studio in Neukölln, it brought together film screenings, panel discussions, and workshops with collectives including Jewish Bund, FACQ Berlin, QuARC Berlin, and ALFILM Festival.
